Almost didn’t write today, but then looked at my long list of X’s for each day that I wrote. Can’t break the chain!
I read in Steal Like An Artist that Jerry Seinfeld writes a joke a day, and puts a big black “X” on his yearly calendar for each day that he successfully writes a joke. Seinfeld says that after you get a long chain of “X”s, you don’t want to break it.
I use an iPhone App, Daily Deeds, to do the same thing. Today everything that possibly could have happened to stop me from writing did, so I was tempted to be a wuss and shirk it off, but with an unbroken line to look at, that strengthened my resolve.
Glad I did, got some really good stuff onto the page!
Got a passion that you’ve always wanted to do but have been procrastinating it? Arm yourself for the battle with War of Art and Steal Like an Artist, and then go at it! (See my post about these two essential weapons for the creative artist here.) And share your experiences! My measly little blog needs some of your comments!
UPDATE: Okay, okay, so I realized after writing this post that my method uses checkmarks, not “X”‘s. Still works.
